Musical Chairs

Working with Maynard studio, we designed public seating for the new Metro tunnel currently under construction. I chose to take a fun, playful approach as I noticed Maynard designs are usually quite reserved. The idea was to utilise the burst of wind that appears right before a train enters the station in the city loop. The wind would pass through the frame of the chair, through a wind harp located in the middle, to create a harmonic frequency. Being particularly interested in the use of sound waves and vibrations, I loved being able to make it a part of my design whilst still adhering to the brief. Initially, the intention for the wind chime was purely for the fun and enjoyment of the user. However, it had the opportunity to be highly functional as well, as a non-invasive warning that a train was approaching. The design represents all things sound, from the intentional oversized screws representing a xylophone, to the subtle curve denoting the fluidity of sound waves.
